Rooftop Solar: A Perfect Fit for Commercial Buildings and Energy Storage

Oct. 29, 2024

When it comes to rooftop solar energy, most people would think of installing solar panels on residential roofs, but in reality, large rooftops on top of commercial buildings and parking lots are also very suitable for installing solar energy systems. This not only allows users to consume the clean electricity they produce themselves, but also reduces electricity costs. In addition to the continuous decline in solar energy costs, government incentive measures also provide additional economic advantages, making commercial solar energy investment more attractive.

The Maryland Energy Administration announced plans to support the installation of solar photovoltaic systems in parking lots and garages to enhance clean energy output. Director Paul G. Pinsky pointed out that these areas hold untapped renewable energy potential, which can help achieve the state's clean energy goals. Eligible enterprises, public universities, local governments, etc. can apply for funding before October 23, 2024. This project provides up to $400000 in funding for the installation of a new solar canopy and up to $550000 in additional subsidies to support solar canopy projects for critical infrastructure microgrids.

Ford recently installed 960 solar panels and added electric vehicle charging stations at its building and collision center in Fangdirac, Wisconsin, USA. The project, in collaboration with Arch Solar in Plymouth, can provide approximately 50% of the electricity for two buildings, reaching 469 kilowatts. Using double-sided solar panel design, winter can utilize the reflection of snow below to improve power generation efficiency.

During the holiday, Ford installed multiple solar panel systems and electric vehicle charging stations, demonstrating its commitment to clean energy. The project was installed by Arch Solar in Plymouth and includes 460 and 496 solar panels, covering the roofs of the Ford showroom and collision center. These systems generate a total of 469 kilowatts of electricity, which is approximately 50% of the electricity demand for the two buildings. These double-sided solar panels are installed at a 23 ° angle, which not only absorbs sunlight from the front but also benefits from the reflected light from the snow, especially improving power generation efficiency in winter.

Solivus, a British thin-film solar company, has announced the advantages of its lightweight thin-film solar panels, suitable for roofs that cannot withstand the weight of traditional solar installations. The warehouse roof area of global supply chain company Astute Electronics is 1524 square meters, but due to the inability of metal roofs to support the weight of conventional solar panels, the company chose Solivus' thin-film solar system to meet its sustainable development goals.

Solivus, a British company, has solved the traditional panel's requirements for roof load-bearing and structure through a lightweight thin-film solar system, which is particularly suitable for corrugated warehouse roofs, avoiding installation complexity and aesthetic issues. Solivus collaborates with Astute Electronics to provide full process services from design, installation to maintenance. The project installed over 360 panels with a peak capacity of 154.8 kilowatts, meeting approximately 30% of Astute's electricity demand, reducing 20 tons of carbon emissions annually, and saving a total of 469 tons of carbon emissions over a lifespan of approximately 24.5 years.

This lightweight system is easy to install, does not require penetration through the roof, and does not affect warehouse operations. Mark Shanley, Sales Director of Astute Electronics, stated that film panels have solved previously thought unusable roof space while helping the company achieve energy independence and sustainable development.

Data shows that the roof area in the UK is 165 million square meters, which theoretically can install 25GW of thin-film solar energy, approximately equivalent to the power generation of 25 nuclear power plants. If the warehouse industry widely adopts this type of thin-film solar energy, it is expected to reduce 2 million tons of carbon emissions annually and save £ 3 billion in electricity costs, helping to achieve the UK's clean energy goals.

The future prospects of rooftop solar energy systems are promising, as they can provide clean electricity for commercial buildings and parking lots, reduce electricity costs, and enhance energy independence. The application of thin-film solar panels has expanded the available space. However, the initial installation cost is high, power generation relies on weather, and maintenance also needs to be carried out regularly.

Combining our efficient energy storage batteries, the advantages of rooftop solar systems will become even more apparent. Energy storage batteries can store excess electricity, ensuring that users can use clean energy even at night and on cloudy days. Yongquan Yuan is currently conducting a special clearance process, offering discounted prices for the ES series energy storage batteries of 10KW and 15KW.
