2024 Paris Olympics: Fulfilling the Promise of a Green Olympics

Aug. 20, 2024

The 2024 Paris Olympics have concluded on August 11th, and athletes will fully practice the Olympic spirit of "faster, higher, stronger - more united" on the field. However, the goal of this Olympic Games is not only to achieve good results in the arena, but also to reduce carbon footprint and strive to become the first Olympic Games that meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.1724135477914 (1).jpg

Strategies for reducing carbon footprint

Compared to the 2012 London Olympics and the 2016 Rio Olympics, the Paris Olympics plan to reduce its carbon footprint by 50% to support the goal of halving global emissions by 2030. Carbon footprint is a key indicator for measuring carbon emissions, covering the entire lifecycle from production to consumption.

In order to reduce carbon footprint, the Paris Olympics has taken multiple measures. Firstly, most of the events are scheduled in existing or temporary venues, with only a few newly built venues for the Olympics. In addition, the Olympic Organizing Committee has used a large amount of recycled and renewable materials to construct venues, such as athlete beds and mattresses made of recycled cardboard and fishing nets, respectively.

Green Energy and Biopropane Torch

All Paris Olympic venues are connected to the power grid, reducing the use of diesel generators. The roof of the Olympic Aquatics Center is equipped with 5000 square meters of solar photovoltaic panels, providing 25% of electricity consumption and becoming one of the largest urban photovoltaic arrays in France. The Olympic Village does not provide air conditioning and maintains indoor temperature through high-performance insulation materials, ventilation systems, and geothermal cooling technology.

In addition, the torch of this Olympic Games innovatively used biomass propane as fuel. Biopropane is made from plant and vegetable waste, further reducing carbon emissions.

Green dining

In order to reduce carbon emissions from food transportation, 80% of athletes' meals come from local farms, half of which are vegetarian, reducing the carbon footprint of each meal by half.

Carbon reduction efforts in previous Olympic Games

The concept of Green Olympics originated from the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics, which launched more than 20 sustainable development projects and for the first time included environmental protection as an important consideration factor in the Olympics.

The 2006 Turin Winter Olympics aimed to become the world's first sports event to meet green standards for greenhouse gas emissions. The Turin municipal government has increased the use of clean energy to over 80% by replacing low emission vehicles, promoting energy-efficient buildings, and renewable energy.

The 2012 London Olympics was the first Summer Olympics to systematically calculate carbon emissions. The London Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games has reduced carbon emissions to 3.3 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent by adopting renewable energy technologies such as biomass boilers, wind power generation, and "luminous tiles".

The Successful Practice of Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics

The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics successfully achieved carbon neutrality by utilizing existing venues, using carbon dioxide transcritical direct cooling system ice making technology, 100% using green electricity, and promoting energy-saving and clean energy vehicles. It is estimated that the total greenhouse gas emissions from the Beijing Winter Olympics from 2016 to 2022 will be 1.637 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, while the actual emissions have been revised to 1.028 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. Ultimately, carbon offsetting was achieved through forestry carbon sinks and corporate sponsored carbon reduction.

The Paris Olympics actively reduces carbon footprint and sets a green benchmark for future large-scale international events. With the intensification of climate change, countries must work together to establish transparent carbon reduction and offsetting mechanisms on a faster, higher, stronger, and more united basis, and promote global sustainable development.

In addition to the extensive efforts to minimize the carbon footprint of the 2024 Paris Olympics, we are excited to share our latest advancements in the renewable energy sector. As a leading energy supplier, we have recently partnered with CATL to offer brand-new Grade A batteries. Our collaboration ensures cutting-edge factory automation and top-quality batteries, delivering full capacity and reliability. This strategic partnership reinforces our commitment to innovation and sustainability in energy storage solutions.
